Data Mapping
ESI Data mapping is the process of identifying and physically documenting or "mapping" the location of all ESI (electronically stored information). There are many reasons to have a detailed data map, but it's especially important, if you have reason to believe you might be involved in a law suit, to perform data mapping and forensic imaging right away.
Data mapping your ESI may not seem "vital" early on, but once you receive a "litigation hold letter," you are already behind the eight ball, and the court's discovery clock will be ticking. When you're under the gun you may not think of all the data locations and possibilities, such as:
- Network Hardware
- Network Software
- Employee Workstations
- Employees Home PC's
- Laptops
- Remote Email Accounts
- Data Sticks
- Data Disks
- Portable Hard drives
- Handheld Devices (cell phones, BlackBerrys, iPhones, PDAs, etc.)
- Voice Mail
- Check-in / Check-out Procedures (for any data storage devices)
Documenting all data sources to create a solid data map is one of New Jersey Legal's specialties. A well-detailed ESI data map will not only aid your litigation efforts, it will ensure that your client does not inadvertently leave data undiscovered.
We can consult with your litigation team or even give a seminar to help further educate your staff on the importance of data mapping and how to begin the process.
